School meals cover the weekdays — but hunger does not take weekends off. Family Food Baskets exists to close that gap, putting a month's worth of staples into the homes of the children we feed at school.

Each basket is built around a family of five and contains locally sourced rice or maize, cooking oil, beans, eggs where available, and a rotating selection of seasonal vegetables. Contents are packed at our regional hubs by volunteers and collected by families at the end of each month.

Why whole households, not just children

A child who eats well at school but returns each evening to an empty pot is still at risk. By supporting the whole household, we remove the pressure that forces families to choose between feeding one child and feeding all of them. It also means siblings who are not yet in school are not left behind.

We prioritise baskets for households headed by single parents, grandparents, and families affected by illness or seasonal income loss. Distribution is organised with local community leaders so that support reaches those who need it most, discreetly and without stigma.

The role of local sourcing

Eighty per cent of the food in our baskets is bought from smallholder farmers within fifty miles of the communities we serve. That keeps money circulating locally, reduces transport emissions, and gives farmers a dependable buyer for their harvest.
